aka-Sol is one of the monikers of the Ecuadorian DJ, producer, and multidisciplinary artist Sol León. Sol is based in Brooklyn and through their Acacia Baila label, they're also a connector: they've released their own tracks as León, Brouhaha, and dp1x as well as collaborations alongside releases from artists all around the globe. Sol is part of the collective running the "Dripping" event series and festival and also holds a residency at Mansions. As a DJ, their sets are dynamic, genre-defying and psychedelic, weaving musical stories that bridge the gap between heady, trippy sounds and percussive grooves that go straight to the body. As a live performer and composer Sol has gathered and directed multiple experimental multidisciplinary ensembles, working with electroacoustic musicians, dancers and visual artists to convey their expansive and mostly improvisatory based creations using all forms of extended scores with graphics, text and animated visuals.
In addition to their solo work, León collaborates with a variety of artists, such as their new duo, Gaze, with Relaxer, as well as projects with Hank Shoklee (Public Enemy & The Bomb Squad), Nona Hendryx (Labelle), Jessica Mitriani, Juan Miguel Marin, Benton C. Bainbridge, Æirrin Ricks, Gryphon Rue, and many more. Their solo and collaborative work has been presented in The Museum of Modern Art of Bogota (MAMBO), The Hunter East Harlem Gallery, The Fridman Gallery (NY), Alice Yard (Port of Spain), Frieze Week (NY), Sustain-Release Festival (NY), Nowadays (NY), Dripping (NY), and Videoclub (Bogota).
